This study is concerned first with the correlation between judgments of hypernasality and measures of oral and nasal sound pressure level, and secondly with comparison of these measures in subjects speaking with obturators in place and again with the obturators removed. Among the 31 subjects were 18 who wore obturators to correct palate defects, seven who had undergone surgical repair of palate clefts, four who had unrepaired palatal inadequacy, and two persons with normal oral structures and voice. The highest Pearson correlation coefficient obtained between nasality judgments and one of several SPL measures was 0.52. For 15 subjects both nasality ratings and SPL measures were affected by obturation condition.
