A clinical signal detection procedure, termed “Signal Detection Audiometry” (SDA), was developed for possible use as a clinical tool. This SDA procedure permits the simultaneous acquisition of 1) measures of detectability, d′, 2) measures of observed criteria, Betao, and 3) threshold measures. These measures were obtained from 12 normal subjects with three kinds of instructions termed “Strict,” “Neutral,” and “Lax,” with and without masking. The most prominent finding was the extremely high (mean Betao = 3.65) criteria values exhibited by the subjects. These high values appeared to contribute to unreliability in the measures of criterion and detectability but not in the threshold measures. It is concluded that further development of SDA procedures needs to be primarily concerned with methods of judiciously structuring subjects' criteria toward an idealistic one, thus eliciting behavior more amenable to the theory of signal detectability. Toward this end, changes in a priori signal probability, response processing, and instructions are suggested.
